Coach Talk – A report from Steve Hazzelby

What a great result for the Tigers last Saturday. An 80 minute performance, seven wonderful tries and a well deserved five point win. The performance against Yorkshire rivals Otley was the best performance of the season so far with tempo, pace and energy from the first minute to the last. In recent weeks we had performed well in the first half but had dropped off in the second allowing teams to get back in the game. This was not the case agains’t a team where past results had always been close.

We started very well with a great score from centre Oli Glasse after lovely wide play from the backs. This was followed two minutes later with a second try for Oli after a great penetrating run from full back Leon Simpson. Both tries converted by Steve Collins giving us a 14-0 lead after six minutes. Otley came back strongly with a well taken try for their outside centre after good inter play with backs and forwards.

We were now playing some wonderful controlled rugby with the forwards driving hard and creating a great platform for our backs to launch their strike plays. This was rewarded with a fabulous try for winger Adam Cheshire after a pin point chip from fly half Steve Collins who added the conversion. Then eight minutes later a 50 yard score for winger Jamie Harrison after a great off load by hooker Matt Gallagher. Half time 28-5 and the bonus point secured.

The second half was just as impressive as the first with another three tries. The first one from hooker Matt Gallagher after a great catch and drive from the forwards after 57 minutes. This was followed five minutes later with a powerful try for young prop James Harper after super interplay between the backs. Steve added the conversion to put us in a commanding 40-5 lead going into the last fifteen minutes.

Otley to their credit did test our defences at this point and did get two more converted tries but the day belonged to the Tigers with a great try for scrum half Danny Openshaw after a sensational 50 metre run from man of the match Leon Simson. Piggy again added the extras and we finished with a well deserved 47-19 win.

This was without doubt the best overall performance of the season so far from the whole squad 1-20. Well done boys. We now have to build on this performance starting with another big challenge this coming Saturday with an away game to 4th placed Sheffield Tigers. Please come and support the boys.

Cheers, Hazz
