Coach Talk – A report from Steve Hazzelby

It has been a mixed two weeks for the players, management and coaches. A hard fought win against a powerful Stourbridge side followed last Saturday with a very disappointing away loss to Hinckley Our last home game was against old rivals Stourbridge a team who like to play open Rugby and where results over the past few seasons have always been close. After the disappointment of the away loss against Tynedale the week previously we were looking for a positive reaction from the players and a good performance. Conditions on the day were very good with a fine sunny day and a dry pitch. Early exchanges were equal with both teams playing hard, physical rugby looking for ways of breaking defences down and it was Stourbridge who scored first after a huge drive from their massive forwards. 7-0 up within the first ten minutes. We came back with a penalty […]

Coach Talk – A report from Steve Hazzelby

After a hard fought home win against Huddersfield the previous week we were looking to build on the performance and record our first away win of the New Year. Unfortunately this did not happen and we went down the fourth loss of the season Last Saturday we made the long trip up to Tynedale in the first away game of the New Year. They had beaten us at home back in September 7-12 in a game that we could and should have won. We had trained well in the week leading up to the game and spirits were high within the squad. Unfortunately conditions on the day were not conducive to open Rugby with gale force winds and driving rain going straight down the pitch. We started the game well playing into the elements keeping possession intelligently with good shape and excellent support from forwards and backs. This was rewarded […]

Coach Talk – A report by Steve Hazzelby

What a great start to the new year and the second half of the season. A tough away win against Wharefdale just before Xmas followed by a marvellous home win against a very tough Huddersfield side last Saturday. Following a well deserved two week break over the festive season we faced a massive challenge against Yorkshire opponents Huddersfield in the first game of the new year. This was always going to be a difficult challenge with several regular first team players out with injuries, sickness and unavailability. Early exchanges were pretty even with both sides testing each others defence and it was not until the 18th minute that Huddersfield scored first with a well worked catch and drive try from their big forwards giving them a 5-0 lead. The Tigers to their credit continued to test their opponents defence with good driving play by the forwards which was rewarded with […]
