Club Closure

Following on from the speech by the Prime Minister this evening, the Club will now close, with immediate effect. This includes the Bar Areas and the Gym. In the words of the Chancellor, this is unprecedented. Your Management Team will be meeting weekly (or more often if needed) in order to ensure that the Club is ready to come out of this crisis in the best possible way. I will try to provide regular updates as we have things to say, so please continue to watch the website and Social Media. If anyone has any questtions on this, please contact me on Chairman@sprufc.co.uk

CV Update

We had the first meeting of SP “COBRA” Committee yesterday to dicsuss the implications of Coronavirus on the operation and finances of the Club. It is fair to say that the implications for the club are enormous, but I can assure all members that we are working very hard as a Management Team to mitigate these implications and try to keep the club afloat during these difficult months ahead. The “COBRA” Team will be meeting formally once a week, and informally as required, to do whatever is necessary for your club and the Members. Firstly, as you are already aware, the RFU has suspended all Rugby related activities. Secondly, the Government has asked the population to avoid gatherings and crowded places such as Pubs and Clubs. As a responsible Management Team, we will of course attempt to comply with any current or future directives. However, we also need to keep […]

RFU suspends all Rugby

Following Government advice, the RFU has taken the decision to suspend all Rugby with immediate affect. This is the message from the RFU: “Following government advice, the RFU will suspend all rugby activity in England, at both professional and community level. Rugby activity includes club training, league and cup matches plus rugby education courses from 17 March until 14 April subject to continued review. The decision has been taken following government advice in the interests of players, coaches, referees, volunteers, supporters and the wider rugby union community. Where possible, players at all levels are encouraged to maintain their own personal fitness and keep active during this time, while following government guidelines about safe distance and safe exercise environments. The RFU will continue to review and monitor government advice and will provide detailed updates on the impact to the season in the coming weeks.” We are having a meeting of our […]

Notes from behind the posts

Well what a couple of weeks of rugby we have had. We always knew these last few games were going to be the telling point of the season and so it seems to be the case. Two titanic battles against Caldy, followed by a tough away trip to Luctonians (which ended in a defeat), the visit of Hull last Saturday looked a real banana skin. Hull are a big team full of quality and with injuries and players missing, this game looked a bridge too far. Not one bit of it. We all remember, the champagne rugby wins, the big try score lines but for me the best performances, and the ones you most enjoy, are the ones when you are up right against it, against a big handy side in not so good conditions. It’s in these games where you find if as a collective you have what it […]

Coach Talk – A report from Steve Hazzelby

What a great response from the Tigers after the disappointment of the three previous results. A close 13-10 win against a very strong Hull team. We had taken the points at their ground back in November with a close 24-27 win but since then they had won 10 of their last 13 games and had recorded a great away win against second placed Fylde and pushed leaders Caldy very close. We had trained well in the week and spirits were high despite the fact that we had a number of key players missing due to injury and unavailability. Early exchanges were hard and physical with both teams testing each other’s defences but neither side was able to put any points on the board. The Tigers set piece was good with a solid scrum and accurate lineout enabling us to make a number of line breaks to get behind the Hull […]

Coach Talk – A report from Steve Hazzelby

It has been a disappointing two weeks for the players, coaches and management team. A home loss against league leaders Caldy followed by an away loss to Luctonians in atrocious weather conditions. Our last home game two weeks ago was against league leaders Caldy in a rearranged fixture. We had played them at their ground two weeks earlier and went down 11-32 in a hard fought battle. We started the game with a well taken try out wide for winger Adam Cheshire after a patient build up by the forwards in their 22. However Caldy hit back with a try after 18 minutes after a strong drive from their big forwards. They then extended their lead six minutes later with a try for their fly half after a well executed catch and drive from the line out. They further extended their lead before the interval with another line out catch […]
