Coach’s Talk – A Report from Steve Hazzelby

Last Saturday we were at home to Loughborough Students, a team who we had beaten quite convincingly back in December. A very fit, young team who like to play wide open rugby at every opportunity. They had a great win against Wharfedale the previous week and came to Park Lane with a strong team hoping to cause an upset. We started the game well, playing the game in their half, keeping possession and varying play left and right, stretching their defences. A scrum on their 40 metre line saw us move the ball left, with centre Oli Glasse breaking the line to feed Full Back, Andy Riley, who touched down. Steve Collins added the conversion and we were up 7-0 after six minutes. The second score came shortly after and started deep within our 22. The ball was moved swiftly to the left, went through three pair of hands to […]

Dave’s Diary

This is an exciting and busy time of year for the all-round sports fan, made more so by live satellite images from all over the world. On any particular day, you can be watching cricket from India or South Africa, golf from the USA, and rugby from just about everywhere. I am not remotely interested in soccer; if I was, I don’t know how I would fit it all in. The rugby alone sees the climax of the northern hemisphere season, at all levels; there is a Women’s Six Nations going on and last weekend I watched England beat Wales in the Under 18 (men’s) tournament, which is being played in France. I found this, live, on You Tube. I also watched Sale Sharks v Bristol Bears, comfortably the worst game of the season. For me, the club rugby season is just beginning to drag a little. Time was, when […]

Coach’s Talk – A Report from Steve Hazzelby

Last Saturday we were on the long journey up to Northumberland to face old rivals Tynedale. We had beaten them quite comfortably at home in December but they are always a difficult team to play at home, with some good results against top teams. They regarded themselves as our bogey team as we had not beaten them at their place for over twelve seasons. We had prepared well during the week but knew that this would be a massive challenge especially with over five of the normal starting players out with injury. The game started very tentatively with both teams kicking for territory and it was Tynedale who scored first with a catch and drive try through their big powerful forwards after we gave a penalty away. Playing with the wind we needed to get on the scoreboard and a lovely line break from scrum half Danny Openshaw took play […]

Coach’s Talk – A Report from Steve Hazzelby

Last Saturday it was our charity day in aid of breast cancer and we were at home against old rivals Chester. A lovely bright day, good playing conditions, a full house and a great atmosphere for a good game of rugby from two teams who were looking to entertain. We were looking for a good reaction from the players after the disappointment of the loss at Hull the week before. It was a lively start from both teams, with Chester looking to run the ball at every opportunity, but it was the home team who scored the first try after 12 minutes. A good line break from centre Oli Glasse, followed by great driving play by second row Bob Birtwell, took the play deep into their half. A set piece scrum saw the ball moved wide for winger Rhys Henderson touch down in the top right-hand corner. Steve Collins added […]
