Last of the Summer Wine!!

We have all reminded of our past over the last few weeks of mourning and nostalgia. I thought it might be nice to show some of Sedgley Park Nostalgia. This is a photo provided to me by Ernie Neely of the “A” XV (or more accurately the “A” XIV) from 1956/57 Season. It was provided to Ernie by Geoff Greenwood. For the older Members of the Club, you will recognise some of the names and maybe even remember some of the people and faces. Between them, Ernie and Geoff have provided the following names: (Back Row) Jeff Cliff – Ron Goodale – Dick Bradley – Geoff Greenwood – Mervyn Jones – Alan Walker – Ron Mason – George Hinds – Billy Walton (Front Row) Phil Tonephol – ????? – ????? – Terry Scott (??) – Jack Wood – Falter Cuthbert – Frank Harrison Geoff informs us “Billy Walton was from […]

Coach’s Talk – A Report from Steve Hazzelby

On Saturday we travelled over to Yorkshire to play Harrogate in our fourth game of the new season. They had not started their campaign well with heavy losses against three of the top teams. Despite this we were taking nothing for granted and knew that we would have to perform well in order to win the game. Early exchanges were tentative, with both teams kicking to gain territory and play in each others half. Our first score came after sixteen minutes. Powerful driving by the forwards, and good possession, saw the ball moved wide for full back Andy Riley to score on the left. This was followed seven minutes later with well worked try for No. 8 Tom Ailes, after a line out catch and drive from the forwards. Steve Collins added the conversion and we were now 12-0 up going into the last fifteen minutes of the half. Harrogate, […]

Dave’s Diary

One video clip of a Sedgley try has gone viral. Playing Hoppers here, at Park Lane, we were awarded a penalty a few metres from their line. Players stood around while the ball was dinked into touch for an attacking line-out. That’s what we all thought, anyway. I was on the opposite side of the pitch, and I moved to get an angle for a photo of the line-out and, hopefully, of the try which followed it. Too late! One of our forwards (Ben Black) intercepted the kick and strolled over the line, while the Preston lads had their backs turned. There was some comment that the move was illegal. I think not. If you indicate you are kicking for goal, you must do so. Players often point to the touchline to tell the ref they are not going for goal. I don’t think it would be illegal even to […]

Upgrade to Heating System

6 years ago, we had a centralised heating and hot water system, run from an ageing, inefficient Gas Boiler. We replaced this centralised system with 3 independent systems run from more efficient, modern Boilers. This significantly reduced our gas usage by being more flexible and efficient. Whilst this was a step in the right direction, events in Ukraine, and the increase in Gas prices this has caused, have made the Management Team of the Club review how we operate the Heating of the Clubhouse. It was decided by the Management Team that we would look at installing Air Source Heat Pumps in all the Function Rooms of the Clubhouse. Air Source Heat Pumps have the capability of saving around 30% for an average household. If we can achieve the same savings, this would amount to savings of £3000-£5000 per annum for Sedgley Park. Significant indeed! We obtained quotations for carrying […]

Coach’s Talk – A Report from Steve Hazzelby

On Saturday we traveled over to Cheshire to play old rivals Chester in the first away game of the season. The game had been in doubt due to the passing of Her Majesty on the Thursday so preparations were somewhat disrupted and many would say that perhaps the RFU should have postponed all fixtures. Chester are a well organised team who like ourselves try to play open rugby and are a team that never give up. They started the game very strongly and scored after only three minutes with a well worked try in the left hand corner. They added the conversion and were 0-7 in the lead, deservedly so, playing direct, high tempo rugby. However we responded almost immediately, with a great try for hooker Danny Maher, after a powerful catch and drive by the forwards. Steve Collins added the conversion which levelled the score 7-7. This was a […]

Queen Elizabeth II

The Sedgley Park family are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. We join the nation and the world in mourning and offer our condolences to the Royal Family at this very sad time. Following advice from the Government and the RFU, Rugby activity will go ahead this weekend. There will be a minutes silence to pay respect to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, to allow Members of our Rugby Family to be united in our grief, as we express sorrow at her passing. As England Rugby have noted “Rugby, at its heart, is about community and bringing people together, in good times and in sad”. Steve Ward Chairman Sedgley Park Rugby Club

Coach’s Talk – A report from Steve Hazzelby

What a start to the new season in National Two North for the Tigers. A 38-15 five point win, six tries and a hat trick for Hooker Danny Maher. On Saturday we entertained old Yorkshire rivals Otley, here at Park Lane. This fixture goes back many years and results have always been close. They gained promotion at the end of last season so a hard game was anticipated. Otley started strongly, taking the play to the Tigers and went ahead with a converted penalty after 2 minutes. We hit back five minutes later with a try for Hooker Danny Maher after a powerful catch and drive from the forwards. Steve Collins added the conversion and we took the lead 7-3. A second try for Danny came after 10 mins after another line out catch and drive from the forwards, which Otley had no answer to. Our third score came four […]

Garic Supports Local Ladies Rugby Team

Our Ladies Team have had sponsorship from Garic, in the form of a donated container unit. Garic have posted on their website: As part of our ‘Project Compass’ initiative to give back to our local communities, on Friday 8th July we proudly donated a recycled unit to the Ladies team at Sedgley Tigers Rugby Club in Whitefield; just around the corner from our Bury Depot. The unit will be a multi-purpose hub for the team, mainly used for both storage and changing facilities. Previously, the team used their own homes to store their kit, which could be a nightmare if one of the team couldn’t make training, and they had kit at their house. Having a dedicated, secure unit at the club to store equipment saves the team a lot of stress and gives them peace of mind. The ladies team will be able to use the new unit as […]
