It was a beautiful Autumn day at Sedgley park as the mighty fourths took on Garstang.
Garstang can boast of being the birth place of one certain Jason Robinson. They probably needed him to stop an impressive SP team performance.
It was great to see a number of players back from injury which helped lift moral. I was particularly impressed with Sedgley front row who made Garstang’s day really hard. A welcome addition was Jake Greenhalgh who played a super part in leading the pack. Liam Craig and Tom Hopper put a great performance and deserve mentioning. At this point I would like to say a massive thanks to Iain Richardson who played a full game for Garstang in the Front Row.
The game started with SP on the front foot and going over the try line within 5 minutes from the kick off. Euan Hamilton recovered from his elbow injury the week scored. He looked a lot happier playing in his chosen position at Fly half.
The restart was knocked on by bonus point for anybody who can guess?
Great work down the line opened the way for Tom (the Velcro) Henderson to score but he dropped the ball with the line begging. (Whoops)
Great work by the forwards and powerful runs by the centres set up a 5m scrum from which Stu Browning, with a darting run resulted in a try. Conversion kick by Zac hill 12-0 SP after 20mins. Stu Browning went over again to make 17-0 to SP conversion missed by Zac Hill.
Good work by SP resulted in a penalty in front of the sticks. Stu Browing elected to kick- I considered this the wrong decision for two reasons. We had total dominance at the scrummage and were breaking easily from eight, but more importantly I had to retrieve the ball from the neighbour’s garden. 20-0.
Great running by Alistair Stanley made good yardage only for him to turn into a Harlem Globetrotter at the end of each run. Craig (The Knock on) then decided to join in and keep the score at half time lower than it should have been at half time dropping the ball whilst over the line. (Clumsy Craig)
Half Time 20-0 – Although according to Alex Bemba “we have already taken half time five minutes ago”. This raised the question from the Referee is he Ok? (Well we all know the answer to that!!!)
Further good team work ended with a try for Jay Bennett one of his hattrick every time insisting that he was trying to give it to young Gareth Payne or Sean (Not a chance was he thinking that?) 25-0
Tries followed fairly easily after this Jake Greenhalgh went over, but the last score went to Big Mike Kenworthy who was back from Injury and who had some very impressive runs throughout the match finished the game with a score of his own. Finishing off a great performance.
Credit must go to Garstang who tackled well all afternoon and showed great spirit in a game where SP we a little too strong they finished well with a reasonable spell late in the game SP defence held.
It was great to see Tony Jones having a run around he epitomises the spirit of the 4th team and long may it last.
MOTM – Joint Alistair Stanley and Iain Richardson for being a great sport
DOTM – Has to go to Bemba for his half time comment
