Coach Talk

A view from Coach, Steve Hazzelby on last week and this weeks games.

What a great start to the season two wins, nine points and third in the league just one point behind leaders Stourbridge. On Saturday we played our first home game of the season against Yorkshire rivals Wharfedale. After the great win at Preston the week before we were looking to put in another strong performance against a very powerful side. This was always going to be a big challenge with our young, inexperienced side seven of whom were 18-19 years of age.

We started the game very strongly keeping possession being patient and were rewarded with a well taken try for No 8 Sam Peet, after four minutes, converted by Steve Collins. Wharfedale came back with strong driving play from their big forwards but could not break down our well organised defence. We then received two yellow cards within five minutes of each other after 25 minutes. Unfortunately they were to both of our front row players which meant that we had to go to uncontested scrums and down to twelve men. Our defence from this time until the half time whistle can only be described as heroic and magnificent as we did not concede any points but further extended the lead with a lovely penalty from Piggy just before the interval. Half time score 10-0. Brilliant half of rugby. The second half started as strongly as the first with another great score for Peety (his second), converted by Piggy to take us 17-0 in front. We then received another yellow card for Mark Goodman with ten minutes to go. Wharfedale to their credit did come back with a well taken try of their own and were then awarded a penalty try to bring the final score to 17-10 and a well deserved four point win. This was a magnificent win considering all the yellow cards and the lads should be extremely proud of themselves. Unfortunately we did pick up two injuries to key players our captain Matt Riley and  Sam Peet. Let’s hope they are not to serious.

This coming Saturday we are away to another powerful Yorkshire side Huddersfield. This again will be a big challenge and we know that we will have to be at our best to take the honours. We are hoping for a lot of support for the lads on the day so come along and enjoy watching your team.

Cheers, Hazz
