Coach Talk – A report from Steve Hazzelby

What a great reaction from the players after the disappointment of losing at Hinckley. On Saturday we played Cheshire rivals Chester at home. We had narrowly beaten them at their ground before Christmas and we knew that this would be a big challenge from a good well organised team.

We started the game strongly with pace, width and high tempo and this was rewarded with a lovely try for new boy Gene Ormseby wide out on the right wing. The build up to the score was excellent with great driving play from the forwards and pace from the backs finished off with a lovely chip over from fly half Steve Collins gathered by Gene. The second try came six minutes later after a great drive from No 8 Tom Ailes, a line break from centre Oli Glasse finished off again by Gene, (his second), putting us 10-0 in the lead within the first fifteen minutes. We were now playing excellent controlled rugby which Chester had no answer to. The third try came on the 25th minute with an excellent try for full back Leon Simpson after wonderful inter linking play between backs and forwards. Steve added the conversion and we were now 17-0 up going into the last fifteen minutes of the first half. Chester to their credit did get a converted try after good driving play from their forwards but a penalty from Piggy gave us the lead 20-7 going into the interval.

The second half started well for the visitors who took the game to the Tigers continually testing our defences. They added another score after 53 minutes after a quick line out and drive from their forwards putting them back in the game 20-14. However our defence was solid and we started to build momentum again through intelligent and patient play. A great drive into their 22 by the forwards in the 68th minute resulted in a great try for Oli Glasse, converted by Piggy. This gave us the win 27-14 and a well deserved bonus point. This was a solid team performance from the players and well deserved. This Saturday we are on the road to league leaders Caldy hoping to upset their inbeaten run. This is a massive challenge for the players and we need as much support as possible. Please come and support your great Tigers team.

Cheers, Hazz
