Coach Talk – A report from Steve Hazzelby

What a great response from the Tigers after the disappointment of the three previous results. A close 13-10 win against a very strong Hull team. We had taken the points at their ground back in November with a close 24-27 win but since then they had won 10 of their last 13 games and had recorded a great away win against second placed Fylde and pushed leaders Caldy very close. We had trained well in the week and spirits were high despite the fact that we had a number of key players missing due to injury and unavailability.

Early exchanges were hard and physical with both teams testing each other’s defences but neither side was able to put any points on the board. The Tigers set piece was good with a solid scrum and accurate lineout enabling us to make a number of line breaks to get behind the Hull defence. Number eight Tom Ailes was having a great game making hard yards from the base of the scrum and young hooker Matt Gallagher was also showing his great footwork. We were playing with good variety in our play, patient build up and securing possession. However, it was not until the 39th minute that we recorded our first score with a wonderful try, out wide, for flying winger Jamie Harrison, converted by Oli Glasse. Hull had taken a penalty in the 36th minute. Half time score 10-3.

The second half was just as intense and hard as the first with both teams giving their all. We went further ahead with a well taken 38 yard penalty from Oli Glasse on the 48th minute and another six minutes later. 13-3 going into the last quarter. Hull then came back with a converted try of their own on the 70th minute after a drive by their big forwards finished by their no 10. The last ten minutes was tense but we were able to see the game out 13-10 and a hard earned 4 point win. This was a solid performance from the boys but perhaps we should have scored more by turning pressure into points. Another hard challenge this Saturday with a rearranged home game against Loughborough Students who are just four points behind us. Come and support your Tigers team.

Cheers, Hazz
